A memoir of the years leading up to the founding of Crawdaddy! magazine.

Paul's introduction, in its entirety

Can't introduce this book. Can't explain it. For almost eighteen years people have looked at Das Energi and asked me, "What's it about?" and I still don't have an answer. This one, I know what it's about -- the stories of our lives, what do you see when you look in the mirror of the past, heart's mirror? -- but I've got another problem. Don't know what it is.

It's not a story. It's about what it feels like when I try to tell my story. Another little piece of my heart. I wrote it with the notion that everybody out there is trying to tell a story every time you look into another person's eyes.

And very few of us ever know that we do sometimes, despite all the chaos and incompleteness, succeed a little bit in saying something, that in our lives we do actually get seen sometimes in our most naked beauty by friends, by other people.

The friends don't know how to tell us, or they do tell us and we don't know we've heard, and we go on believing we're so utterly alone. But it isn't completely true.

Heart of Gold is a cry from beyond the grave of love and utter astonishment at the fact of living and the news that we sometimes are in the same world as our other selves, and at the same time. Part one was written in short installments for a weekly newspaper in New York, and part two for another paper in Santa Cruz two years later. It was always intended to be a book, and now it is.
